Consort Clubs welcome viols of all sizes and their players of all levels @A=415

Want More Viol Playing Than Just Four Times a Year?

Do you wish you could have viol play-days more than four times a year? Want to get your Jenkins fix more often than just at Viols West? You can!

​

Since 2021, LAB has offered two Consort Clubs, meeting weekly during our Fall, Winter, and Spring sessions.

 

Consort Club is led by Artistic Director Lindsey Strand-Polyak, with support and additional leadership from Eva Lymenstull. We also occasionally welcome guest teaching artists, including Erik Andersen, Erik Tinkerhess, Shanon Zusman, and Malachai Bandy.

Consort Club is designed to help you build the skills that make you a stronger, more confident consort player, including:

​

• Sight-reading

• Bow technique

• Sound exploration and ensemble blend

• Listening and ensemble skills

• Repertoire knowledge

• And, of course, becoming an all-around better consort player!
   

Each session includes a mix of technique, themed repertoire explorations, sight-reading, and special topics. We might dig into historical treatises such as those by Diego Ortiz and Christopher Simpson, or work our way through every version of Browning we can find! Depending on the repertoire and players' preferences, we may play pieces doubled or one-on-a-part.

Whether you’re looking to build your consort skills beyond summer workshops with the aim of leveling up at Conclave next year, or simply want to feel more comfortable at VdGSA play-days and house gatherings, Consort Club is for you!

Level: VdGSA Lower Intermediate and beyond
Open to all viol sizes: Treble, Tenor, and Bass

Who: Musicians ages 16 to 86! We welcome amateur viol players eager to play, pre-professionals looking for playing experience, professional players who want to study Renaissance and Baroque performance practices, and students who want to explore the music of these eras. Basically, if you enjoy learning new ways of playing old music, we think you’ll have fun.
